Tank builds

Tank Builds

Survive longer by balancing mitigation, recovery and crowd control instead of only stacking health.

Answer all three steps to see a recommendation.

Quick answer

A tank build is a layered defense system, not just the highest armor. It combines avoidance, damage reduction, temporary protection, recovery and crowd control, then keeps enough damage to finish the fight.

Choose your tank style

Choose Your Tank Style

Tanks do not all survive the same way. Pick how you want to handle incoming damage and the rest of the build falls into place.

Mitigation Tank

Take as little damage as possible.

How a tank survives

Survivability Stack

Incoming damage passes through several layers before it ever touches your health bar. A tank build should feed more than one of them.

  1. Incoming attack
  2. Avoid / deflect
  3. Mitigation
  4. Shield / guard
  5. Health lost
  6. Recovery

Defensive windows

Defensive Uptime

A tank does not always fail because defense is too low. Often the defensive tool was simply not available when the hit landed.

If you keep dying in the gap, add cooldown support, a second defensive tool, control during downtime or safer positioning.

Avoid over-tanking

Too Much Defense?

If survival already feels comfortable, another defensive slot often gives less value than one of these.

  • Faster killing
  • More crowd control
  • More mobility
  • Better cooldown uptime

The goal is not to fill every slot with defense. It is to stop dying with the smallest defensible investment, then spend the rest on finishing the fight.

Missing a piece?

Don't Have This Item?

Every defensive slot has a stand-in. Substitutes keep the same role, so the build keeps working while you farm the ideal piece.

Progression stage

Build by Progression Stage

The same tank identity changes as you progress. Early rewards simple, available defense; endgame rewards full uptime management.

  • Early

Focus on easy-to-obtain armor, one reliable recovery source and one defensive artifact.

    See recommended loadout
  • Mid

Add defensive synergies, a second recovery source and some control and cooldown support.

    See recommended loadout
  • Late / Endgame

Run a full mitigation stack, manage defensive uptime and prepare boss and Soul Storm variants.

Building for a boss

Build for a Boss

Pick the boss you are stuck on and see which defensive layers to emphasize. Boss attack mechanics stay in the boss guide.

For this fight, prioritize

  • Enough burst protection for its biggest hit
  • Sustain to survive a long damage phase
  • Control where it is not immune
  • Recovery you can rely on between windows

Sift, Soul Storm and Co-op Variants

The same tank core shifts depending on where and with whom you play.

The Sift

Sustained, dense encounters reward recovery and crowd control over raw burst protection.

Soul Storms

Long fights reward defensive uptime and sustain so you can keep holding space.

Execution

How to Play It

Four steps per style. Learn the loop, then repeat it under pressure.

Mitigation Tank

  1. 1.Enter with basic mitigation already active.
  2. 2.Control or remove the most dangerous enemy first.
  3. 3.Save the strongest defensive tool for burst windows.
  4. 4.Recover while pressure is low, then re-engage before you are surrounded.

Sustain Tank

  1. 1.Engage and let your recovery sources start ticking.
  2. 2.Stay in the fight so healing keeps flowing.
  3. 3.Back off before a burst window, not after it lands.
  4. 4.Reset your potion cycle before the next long phase.

Control Tank

  1. 1.Group enemies before you commit to a control tool.
  2. 2.Keep the pack staggered so fewer attacks land.
  3. 3.Use control during your own defensive cooldowns.
  4. 4.Clear the edges first so nothing flanks you.

Artifact Tank

  1. 1.Do not spend every defensive cooldown at once.
  2. 2.Rotate defensive windows instead of stacking them.
  3. 3.Use control during cooldown gaps.
  4. 4.Keep one emergency tool for the unexpected hit.

Why Am I Dying?

Pick what usually kills you. Each answer lists what to check and which tank variant to switch to.

What usually kills you?

One huge hit

Check

Recovery happens after damage, so it cannot save you from a single large hit. Check burst mitigation, a guard or shield effect, max health and one emergency artifact.
