"Up to 4" is the total party size. Mixed co-op shares the same four-player limit; it is not four couch players plus four online players.

Local and Online Are Two Different Things

Where players sit and whether the session is online are two separate choices. Couch play is not automatically offline, and online play is not only for remote players.

Join a party

How Do You Want to Join?

Three ways to bring players together, depending on whether you already know who you're playing with.

Friends

You already know who you're playing with.

Invite from your platform friends list.

Party code

Share a code directly with someone, even without adding them.

The host shares the code; the friend enters it.

Matchmaking

Find other heroes when you don't have a full party.

The game places you with compatible players.

Party code

The 8-Character Party Code

A party code is the unique eight-character, alphanumeric code for your current party. It works across platforms.

Host

  1. 1.Create or open your party.
  2. 2.Find the party code in the lobby or the active session.
  3. 3.Share the eight-character code.

Friend

  1. 1.Choose join by party code.
  2. 2.Enter the code.
  3. 3.Join the party.

This site cannot generate a real in-game party code. Only the game can.

Matchmaking

What Matchmaking Considers

Find other heroes when you don't have a full party.

You may join

  • A new party
  • A party with open slots
  • A session already in progress

Matching considers

  • Main and core quest progress
  • Current region
  • Power level

There is no public queue estimate. This page explains what matchmaking considers, not a live queue time.

Two ways to start

I know the players

Use your friends list or a party code, then join the party.

I need players

Use matchmaking to find compatible players, and you may join an active session.

Can Different Platforms Play Together?

The short answer first, then the platform matrix and the difference between playing together and sharing a hero.

Yes.

Minecraft Dungeons II supports cross-platform multiplayer and co-op, so players on different platforms can share a party.

Don't mix these up

Crossplay

Can two different platforms play in the same party?

Cross-progression

Can I use the same hero on another platform?

When the platform supports it and the platform account is linked to the same Microsoft account, online hero progression can continue on another platform.

Important

Online or Offline? Read This First

Online and offline are separate modes. Choose the one that matches how you plan to play before you invest in a hero.

Choose before you invest

Online and offline are separate modes. Before you invest heavily in a hero, choose the mode that matches how you plan to play.

Players have reported creating an offline hero and then expecting to use it online. Treat the mode choice as a real decision, not a detail.

How this page labels evidence

Official
Behavior that is officially documented.
Observed
Behavior that can be reproduced in the current build.
Player-reported
A player issue or complaint that is not yet official behavior.

Hero transfers between online and offline are not documented as permanent. Check the online vs offline guide and the updates page before assuming a transfer will change.

Session behavior

What Happens When Players Join or Leave?

The session adapts as the party changes size.

  1. 1 player

    Player 2 joins

  2. 2-player session

    Players 3 and 4 join

  3. 4-player session

    Player 3 leaves

  4. 3-player session

The game adjusts the session as players join and leave.

How online sessions work

Dedicated Servers

Online sessions run on dedicated servers rather than a player-hosted world. Server selection takes player latency into account.

No live server ping is shown here. This site cannot read the game's server assignment.

Progress and ownership

Hero, Session and World Progress

Hero progress
What follows your hero.
Session progress
What belongs to the current session.
Host and world state
What depends on the host or world state.

Online hero progression is stored by the game's backend and can continue on another supported platform when the platform account is linked to the same Microsoft account.

Not verified yet

Which player's quest state applies, how completion and rewards are assigned, and how joining mid-quest is counted are not documented clearly enough to state here. They will be added once verified.

  • Whether shared progress counts for every player
  • Whose quest state a shared session uses
  • How rewards are assigned in a shared session
  • How hero save data is handled in each mode

Playing With Different Progression

When you and a friend are at different points, a few things can matter. This page does not invent a compatibility score.

  • Quest progression
  • Region access
  • Power difference
  • Session matchmaking

If the rules are verified later, this section can become a real session compatibility helper.

Party Scaling

The game adjusts the session as players join or leave.

Exact multiplayer scaling is not normalized yet, so this page does not show numbers such as enemy health per party size.

Can I Join a Friend's Expansion?

Players who do not own an expansion can still join a friend's expansion session through an invite or party code.

Matchmaking into an expansion session follows different rules, and ownership rules can change, so check this again after a patch.

Troubleshooting

Can't Play With Your Friends?

Pick what's happening, and this router sends you to the page that owns the fix.

Can't join? Check these in order

  1. 1Are you on the same game version?
  2. 2Are you using the correct online hero?
  3. 3Are you signed in?
  4. 4Is crossplay and account setup complete?
  5. 5Does the party still have an open slot?
  6. 6Is the party code still valid?
  7. 7Does your platform require an online subscription?
  8. 8Is there a known current issue?
