Online Hero
- Remote friends, party codes and matchmaking
- Crossplay and mixed couch + online parties
- Backend progression and supported cross-device play
Multiplayer · Hero Mode
Choose the right hero mode for crossplay, couch co-op, offline play, cross-progression and save management before you invest hours in a character.
This choice matters
At launch, Online and Offline heroes are kept separate. Do not assume you can move the same hero between both modes later.
Current behavior, not a permanent guarantee. This page is re-checked after patches.

Quick answer
If you are unsure, this is the short version. The recommender below handles mixed needs that a single hero cannot cover.
For most players who expect to play with others at some point, an Online Hero is the safer default.
Neither mode is better. They cover different situations, and one hero cannot do both if you need disconnected play and remote play.

The two hero modes
An Online Hero is stored by the game's backend, so its progression is not tied to one device. It can use every online capability and still play solo or couch.
An Online Hero can use
Online does not mean multiplayer-only
Choosing an Online Hero does not force you to play with others. You can still play solo at any time.
An Offline Hero lives in local save data. It plays solo or with people on the same device, with no remote party and no online services.
An Offline Hero can use
Offline is not single-player only
An Offline Hero still supports couch co-op with up to four players on one device.
Yes. Both online and offline modes support local play on one device. The difference is what the hero can do beyond that.
Online Hero + couch + remote friends
With an Online Hero you can start with local players and take the session online so remote friends join the same party.
The total party is still up to four players. Crossplay and mixed setup are explained on the crossplay guide.
Open the crossplay guideThese three ideas are often mixed up, and mixing them up leads to wrong expectations.
Can two different platforms play in the same party?
Can I use the same hero on another platform?
Where and how a hero exists: an Online Hero or an Offline Hero. This is what determines the capabilities on this page.
Yes, in supported account setups. When the platform supports it and the platform account is linked to the same Microsoft account, an Online Hero can continue on another supported platform.
Where does an Online Hero live?
Online Hero data is stored in the game's backend, so progression is not tied to one specific device.
No normal, supported conversion workflow is established at launch. Online and Offline heroes are handled as separate heroes, so the usual answer is to create another hero in the mode you need.
What this means
Online to Offline
There is no supported export-to-offline workflow either. Online Hero data lives on the backend, so it cannot simply be downloaded into a local offline hero.
You can switch which hero you play by selecting or creating a hero in the mode you want. That changes the mode you are playing, not the mode of an existing hero.
Offline Hero A
No mode conversion
Online Hero B
The mode belongs to the hero, not to your account. An "offline" label is the current hero's mode, not a locked account state.
Already chose?
First, work out whether you are still early. The answer is different if you have just started or already have hours of progress.
Create the hero type you actually need now, before investing more progression in the wrong one.
Keep your existing hero and create a second hero in the other mode.
Do not delete a hero with progress just to change mode. Keep it and add the hero you need.
Known boundaries
Online heroes depend on the online service. If you need guaranteed disconnected play, choose an Offline Hero instead of assuming an Online Hero will work without a connection.
Online multiplayer troubleshootingAn Offline Hero has no remote multiplayer, so it cannot join or host an online party. If joining friends matters, use an Online Hero.
In couch co-op, another player may create a local guest hero. Guest hero behavior is separate from the Online/Offline choice, and its full rules are not confirmed yet.
Being tracked: whether a guest hero can later be used alone as a main hero is not established, so treat this as an open question, not a rule.
Save files
Community save tools work with locally accessible Offline Hero data on PC. That is not a reason to assume Online Hero backend data can be edited locally.
Online Hero
Online Hero: backend progression, not a normal local save.
Offline Hero
Offline Hero: PC offline saves may be locally accessible for backup or editing.

Common questions
The questions players ask before and after creating a hero.
Choose Online if you may ever play with remote friends, use crossplay or matchmaking, or continue the hero on another supported device. Choose Offline if you need reliable play without an internet connection or want a locally editable PC save.
No normal conversion workflow is established. You can switch which hero you play by creating or selecting a hero in the other mode, but that does not convert the existing hero.
An Online Hero depends on the online service. If you need guaranteed disconnected play, use an Offline Hero.
No. An Offline Hero has no remote multiplayer. Use an Online Hero to join or host an online party.
Yes. Both modes support local play on one device, and an Online Hero can also take that local session online.
No. Crossplay is different players on different platforms playing together. Cross-progression is your Online Hero following your supported account setup.
In the game's backend, so progression is not tied to one device.
If you are still early, create the hero you need now. If you have progress, keep the old hero and create a second hero in the other mode.

This decision is patch-sensitive. It is re-checked whenever online, crossplay or save behavior changes.
